Resilience is a Verb: How organizations can help people build and flex their "challenge muscles"

Dr. Linda Hoopes, Author and President, Resilience Alliance
Valerie Norton, Chief People Officer, Habitat for Humanity International

Resilience was named the word of the year for 2021. We all have a picture of what it is, but knowing how resilience works is fundamental to systematically building it in your organization. Dr. Linda Hoopes, I/O psychologist, founder of Resilience Alliance, and author of 2 books including the award-winning Prosilience: Building Your Resilience for a Turbulent World, has been studying resilience for nearly 30 years. She's incorporated recent advances in psychological research, neuroscience, and organizational effectiveness into this presentation. You'll learn about:

  • a fresh view of resilience as a process of creating positive energy spirals
  • a set of skills and mindsets people can develop to do this more effectively
  • how the organization's culture and leadership can inhibit or support people's ability to flex these "challenge muscles"
  • the potential impact on outcomes including engagement, burnout, and organizational change effectiveness

To provide a view into how this work can be applied in an organizational setting, Valerie Norton, Chief People Officer at Habitat for Humanity International, will describe how she led the development of resilience capability within HFHI, including setting up a network of practitioners and designing approaches tailored to the needs of different segments of the organization.
