A Focus on Mental Health: Making Your Company's Well-being Strategy a Competitive Advantage

Dr. Monte Masten, MD, MBA, MPH, FACOG & Betsy Nota-Kirby, MS

Whether it is attempting to balance the work from home environment with return to work and what the new workplace will bring, along with perhaps caretaking responsibilities, coping with fear and isolation, grieving the loss of a job, unprecedented change, or financial hardship, COVID-19 has significantly impacted the lives of employees around the world. According to Mental Health American's 2021 State of Mental Health Report, there has been a 93% increase in the number of people looking for help with anxiety and depression. Employers at an increasing rate have shared their concerns about the well-being of their employees and the negative effects generated by the global pandemic. Companies and HR leaders are stepping up and trying to find innovative ways to address mental health challenges beyond the standard Employee Assistance Program. The conversation starts with the importance of addressing all dimensions of well-being, and not in isolation, along with acknowledging the impact that workplace culture and social determinants of health have on overall workforce health.
